Grow 73 is a community group working in the Rutherglen area to create a more connected and resilient community and to improve the local environment via shared growing activities, events and projects.
Our main aim is to develop shared growing and gardening activities in the area – to grow food and plants for all to use, as well as organising community events such as The Big Lunch in June, the Festive Sing Along in December and inter-generational workshops. We hope to tackle social isolation, loneliness and other health issues through these activities.
We are keen to develop the land next to the BMX track in Overtoun Park as a community garden and have recently placed, with the approval of South Lanarkshire Council, a shipping container on the land as a first step toward this. We have weekly meet-ups at the shipping container from 9.30am on a Monday morning where we meet for a cuppa, chat and tend to the community garden. This is free and open to the whole community so please come along!
We have also adopted Rutherglen Train Station and deliver a weekly lunchtime gardening club to a local school.
We always need help so if you have any free time and you would like to volunteer, or have spare plants you can donate to us please do get in touch!
